Alocasia Regal Shield - Elephant Ear Plant
The Alocasia 'Regal Shield' is a cross between the Alocasia odora and the Black Velvet which speaks to why it has those beautiful dark green leaves with dark purple-tinged undersides. The light green veins on the upper surface and purple-yellow-green veins on the lower surface create an other-worldly effect on this gorgeous and grand plant. Be sure to give them space as they grow up to 8' tall and 4' wide. The perfect statement plant for any brightly lit room! We absolutely love the elegant royalty of these beauties.
LIGHT: Your Regal Shield will grow best in bright in-direct light. Close to a south facing window or in a north facing window would be best. Avoid direct sunlight which will scorch the big beautiful leaves. The Regal Shield will follow the light with its leaves so it's a good idea to rotate frequently for balanced growth.
WATER: Alocasia Regal Shield do not like to be over-watered and definitely do not like to sit in soggy soil, that said they do like to be watered regularly when the first 2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Too many yellow leaves means the plant is staying too wet, brown tips on the leaves means it has been kept too dry. Watering frequency will change based on their environment so best to do a finger check on the soil or use a moisture meter.
HUMIDITY: This Regal lady can do well in most household environments but it does thrive with humidity that is a above average. A pebble tray or a room humidifier would be a good idea if you live in an arid climate.
