Heart-leaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum)
As with all Philodendron, the Heart Leaf is an easy grower and great for beginners or someone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of time tending to their plants. Just because they don’t require constant attention doesn’t mean they lack in beauty. Philodendron hederaceum are often called the 'sweetheart vine' because of its cute heart shaped dark green leaves that sprout from its vines. What a great gift for a loved one…or show yourself some love and bring one of these babies home.
...and - did you know that this hardy houseplant was one of the top 10 plants identified by NASA during their study with ALCA (Associated Landscape Contractors of America) while studying the effects of air purification by different plants (albeit in the 'space station'). By way of this study, we now know that Philodendrons have shown that they help to remove formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, nitrogen oxides, and other volatile organic pollutants from the air. And it's the perfect bedroom plant as it converts carbon dioxide to oxygen at night, not just during the day!
Incredible - right! Not only is this plant so aesthetically great for your plant collection, it helps to clean the air in your living environment and keep you and yours healthier.
Philodendron are so versatile and can be displayed in a number of different ways in your home. Vines love to climb, and generally in their natural habitat would climb up the trunks of trees. Use a totem or trellis for your vine to climb if you prefer a more vertical aesthetic. Pot it in a hanging basket and allow it to trail, or simply set it on a shelf and let it do its thing!
Light: Medium to Bright indirect light will keep your Heart Leaf Philodendron the happiest. These plants can be low light tolerant but may result in a more vine than leaf (leggy) look.
Water: Philodendron like the soil to almost dry between watering. Try to avoid soil from completely drying, this plant will let you know when it is thirsty by getting wilted leaves, after a good deep watering you will see it perk up again.
Humidity: Although adding humidity to your space is not necessary for a Philodendron, they would sure be happier if you did.
NOTE: Heart Leaf Philodendron is toxic and should be kept away from children and pets.
